Angamaly is a town in Kerala forming the northernmost suburb of the city of Kochi. The town is often referred to as �the gateway� to Kochi and the precinct is situated at the heart of Angamaly, at the intersection of National Highway and MC Road where all the major commercial activities take place. The study area has vast vacant lands as well as compactly placed buildings along the National Highway, which conveys that it is at a transition stage of development from rural to urban characteristics. The residents of Angamaly co-exist together despite differences in social classes.
