ANNESHA ALOK DASGUPTA

Guwahati, a city shaped by time and Brahmaputra is the capital of Assam and is the largest metropolis of Northeast India. The river Brahmaputra splits the city into two, North and South. Civilization emerged in the banks of the river and slowly spreading South wards, which is the older part whereas the Northern part is the newer development.

The precinct Hatigaon is a predominantly residential unit, located towards the South of the city adjacent to the state capital Dispur. As a part of Understanding the City, a 1 Sq.km area of Hatigaon is analysed through various lenses in context to the city. The study shows the journey of the evolution and transformation of the precinct from a sub-urb to a major urban part of the city. The book focuses on Hatigaons livelihood and how it has affected the jobs and transportation choices of the people.
